Curriculum

Teaching Methods

We use a variety of teaching methods matched to the  learning needs of the children. There is some whole class teaching and much small group and individual teaching to take account of children's learning styles, ability and experience.

Children learn best from "hands-on" experiences. We provide outdoor learning through focused play in every class, for every child, every day as a standard part of each day's learning.

In January 2010 Ofsted said of Downs Way

"Adults ensure that there is a positive learning environment".

"Pupils are cared for well".

Literacy

Reading Schemes

We use a real book scheme which uses a collection of fiction and non-fiction books. These books are levelled and contain books from all the major reading schemes.

Phonics Schemes

We use Letters and Sounds supplemented with Jolly Phonics and Phonics Play.
