Governors are all volunteers, they work in partnership with the Headteacher, staff, parents and the Local Authority (Surrey) to raise standards of achievement in the school.  The main functions of the governing body are to ensure:

Governors have a range of skills including; strategic or long term planning, ability to analyse data and documents, confidence to ask probing questions and good interpersonal skills as a team player.  In doing so they, in partnership with the Headteacher are responsible for:

Governors of Downs Way School are expected to attend Governors' meetings; visit the school to get to know the staff and children and to see what is going on and to take a lead specialist role to monitor areas of the school policy and the school development plan.  Lead areas include; Safeguarding, Children in Care, Health and Safety, Special Educational Needs & Disability (SEND) and vulnerable children as well as monitoring Pupil Progress and Wellbeing across the curriculum.  Minutes of Governors' meetings outlining decisions of the Full Governing Body are available in the school reception area.

Governors are also available to meet parents and other stakeholders and can be contacted via the school office.

Downs Way Governing Body is made up of Parent, Staff, Local Authority and Community Governors.  The number of each group of Governors is set down in law.  Currently the size of the Governing Body is 12 ( and includes three vacancies).
